After spending a few days in Zadar, we took a bus down to Split. I highly recommend traveling Croatia by bus. It’s very affordable and the roads are absolutely breathtaking.
Split definitely has more of a party vibe than Zadar. You could tell everyone was there on vacation to have a good time.
We went in early September and it felt like the perfect time to visit. There were still people around but the summer crowds had died down. The weather was warm and breezy and prices were a little lower than in their peak summer season.

What to do
EXPLORE OLD TOWN
You could spend hours walking around inside the old city walls. We spent 7 days here and were still finding new nooks on our last day.
BACVICE BEACH
This was our first introduction to Croatian beaches. They are manmade and mostly consist of concrete slabs. That being said, the water is AMAZING – crystal clear, aqua blue and refreshing.
RENT A PADDLE BOAT
We have a thing for paddle boats. But the ones in Split have slides to play on! If it’s not too windy, rent a boat for an hour and pedal out into the sea for some water fun.

Where to stay
We rented an Airbnb just outside of old town. The location was great, but if we go back I’d try to rent a place inside the old town walls. It’s the most touristy area, but it’s also where all the Split vibes are.

Located right on the boardwalk, Olive Tree is an idyllic place for dinner or drinks at sunset. You can find traditional Balkan food & beautifully garnished drinks. Order a pina colada and feel your worries melt away.
BOKERIA

A beautifully designed eatery in the heart of old town. We went here for breakfast and lunch because it was that good.

Go here to kick off your night on the town. Great music, good cocktails, a Great Gatsby style interior and a dance floor with no judgment.

Go here if you want to pretend you’re rich and famous. The vibe is posh and they served me flowers in my gin & tonic.
ANTIQUE BAR

Another great restaurant located right on the boardwalk. Go here for a pre-dinner drink and sip it sitting on one of their luxurious outdoor couches.

Good for lunch on the go and late-night snacking. They are on literally every corner and open late.

Split is such a fun stop if you’re heading to Croatia! It’s the perfect mix of new and old and you’ll be in for sights you’ve never seen before.
